Bed covers are one of those upgrades that are not only “nice to have” but also something you’ll end up using every single day. Whether you’re hauling tools, camera gear, or just trying to keep things out of sight and dry, having a secure setup makes a big difference.
There are a ton of options out there, but retractable covers fall into a different category than soft roll-ups or folding designs. The RetraxPRO MX is built around that idea, combining a heavy-duty aluminum construction with a smooth retracting system and a really clean overall look. After installing it on a 2026 Toyota Tacoma with the 5-foot bed, it’s clear this is aimed at people who prefer a more premium option.

Installation

Tools Required
- 3/8” drive ratchet
- 3/8” drive short extension
- 7/16” wrench or socket
- 9/16” wrench or socket
- Phillips screwdriver
Step 1. Prep The Bed

Start by removing the black plastic end caps on the factory bed rails to access the tie-down hardware.
If your truck has a drop-in bedliner, check the front corners near the cab to make sure there’s enough clearance for the canister assembly. Some liners may require slight trimming.
Next, slide the supplied mounting cleats into the Tacoma’s factory bedside rail system, two per side. These will act as the mounting points for the Retrax side rails.
Step 2. Install Side Rails & Front Cover

Attach the spacer blocks and mounting hardware to both Retrax side rails using the supplied fasteners and washers.
With the mounting hardware loosely attached, remove the shipping brackets and protective shipping tubes from the canister assembly. Keep one of the shipping brackets nearby, since it will be reused later as a spacing guide.
Next, carefully pull the cover out of the canister about 6-8 inches and slide it into both side rails. Once properly aligned, secure the rails to the canister with the supplied mounting screws.
After the rails are secured, install the front cover panel using the included Allen hardware. The weather stripping should face outward toward the cab.
Step 3. Install The Canister

With everything assembled, carefully lift the complete canister-and-rail assembly into the truck bed. This part is easiest with two people since the canister itself is fairly heavy.
Position the canister against the front bulkhead near the cab while ensuring the front weather seal sits flat across the bedside. Then, slide the rails rearward toward the tailgate.
Retrax recommends using one of the shipping brackets as a spacer to position the rails approximately 1/8” away from the tailgate for proper clearance and operation.
Step 4. Secure, Align & Test The Cover

Once the rails are positioned correctly, tighten the mounting hardware into the bedside cleats.
Before fully tightening everything down, measure the distance between the rails at multiple points to ensure they remain parallel. Retrax includes adjustment shims for minor spacing corrections. Proper rail alignment is important for smooth operation and preventing binding.
After alignment is confirmed, fully tighten all hardware and cycle the cover open and closed several times to verify smooth movement.
Step 5. Install Drain Tubes (Optional)

The final step is attaching the drain tubes to the bottom of the canister assembly. The tubes twist and lock into place, then route down through the factory bed drain areas or another suitable exit point. Routing the tubes along the most direct path possible improves water drainage and prevents water from collecting inside the canister or rails.
Review

After using it for a bit, the biggest thing that stands out is just how convenient the retractable design is compared to a traditional folding or rolling cover. Being able to slide it open partially or fully makes it much easier to live with day to day, especially when carrying larger gear. Everything about the cover feels solid, too. The aluminum construction feels sturdy, the operation is smooth, and it doesn’t have any of the flimsy feel that some cheaper bed covers can have.

The only real downside is losing a little bit of bed space near the cab because of the canister housing. Something like the EZ-OFF (linked earlier) solves that if it’s important to you (easy to remove canister). But overall, the convenience, cleaner look, and more premium feel easily make up for it. Weather resistance is solid as well. Even after heavy storms and dusty pavement, the interior of the truck bed stays much cleaner than before.
Some people note improvements in MPG due to less drag, but I can’t comment on that with certainty. I can tell you the mileage didn’t go down, haha.
Final Thoughts

Overall, the RetraxPRO MX feels like a premium upgrade that fits the 4th Gen Tacoma really well. The low-profile design keeps the truck looking clean, while the retractable setup makes it genuinely practical for everyday use.
If you want something more secure and refined than a traditional folding cover, this is an easy one to recommend.
