One Of Rigid’s Latest, Most Powerful & Feature Packed Lights

RIGID Industries is a premier name in off-road lighting, known for producing durable, high-output LED systems built to withstand the harshest environments. Their extensive lineup, ranging from light bars to vehicle-specific pods, is a staple on overland rigs, UTVs, and high-end off-road builds, including their notable collaboration with Toyota’s TRD Pro platform. The Phoenix line is their latest and greatest release.

What sets RIGID apart is that its products are purpose-built for actual abuse. They don’t just design lights that look good; they engineer them to handle the severe vibration, dust, and water that come with real trail driving. For a Tacoma that actually sees dirt, this durability is essential.

Rigid Phoenix XL Pod Mounted As Ditch Light

As off-road lighting has evolved from a simple race for the brightest light bar to a demand for specialized beam patterns, color temperatures, and seamless integration, RIGID has adapted. The Phoenix Series feels like their direct answer to this shift, offering a highly refined, modern solution for today’s specialized builds. So, when I set out to find the perfect new lights for my build, I naturally gravitated to the new Phoenix XL pods.

Specs, Features & Build Quality

4th Gen Tacoma TRD Pro With Rigid Industries Phoenix XL Pods

The Phoenix XL is the larger pod in RIGID’s Phoenix lineup. It is a 7-inch pod-style light designed for high output, adjustability, and modular use. The version I’m running is the spot beam pattern, which is ideal for throwing light farther down trails, roads, and open terrain.

Some of the key specs and features include…

  • 7-inch pod light
  • 14,213 raw lumens
  • 191 watts
  • Spot beam pattern
  • 221,579 candela peak beam intensity
  • 471 meters at 1 lux
  • 941 meters at 0.25 lux
  • 9V–36V operating range
  • Five selectable color modes
  • Three selectable power modes
  • Swappable lens options (additional ones sold separately)
  • Cast aluminum housing
  • Protective cast aluminum bezel
  • Deutsch connector
  • Stainless steel U-shaped bracket
  • Mounting hardware included
  • Limited lifetime warranty

Right out of the box, the Phoenix XLs feel premium, down to the packaging. These are not tiny accessory pods that feel like they were made just to fill space on a bracket. They have real weight to them, the housing feels solid, and the overall design looks aggressive without feeling cheap or gimmicky. They give the impression that they’re going to last a long time.

Why I Chose The Phoenix Series

Rigid Phoenix XL Pods On 4th Gen Tacoma

There are many lighting options out there, especially for Toyota owners. You can go with smaller ditch lights, larger light bars, bumper-mounted lights, fog light replacements, or a combination of all of them. For this build, I wanted something that would make a noticeable difference both visually and functionally.

New Rigid Phoenix Lights On Toyota Tacoma

The Phoenix XLs stood out to me for a few reasons.

First, the size and overall presence are hard to ignore. A 7-inch pod on the A-pillar gives the truck a very aggressive look without feeling completely overdone. It has that serious off-road, almost race-inspired appearance, but it still fits the lines of the 4th Gen Tacoma well.

Second, the output is substantial. These are rated at 14,213 raw lumens per light, with a peak beam intensity of 221,579 candela. Lumens are always the number people talk about first, but candela is what really matters when you’re talking about how far a light can throw down a trail or road. The Phoenix XL is rated for 471 meters at 1 lux and 941 meters at 0.25 lux, which gives it serious distance potential for a pod light.

Third, I liked that the Phoenix XL offers multiple output types. Having several shades of amber and white options in one light is a big deal. Amber can be useful in dusty, rainy, snowy, foggy, or other situations where bright white light can create too much glare. White light is great when you want maximum visibility and distance. Having both available without physically swapping lights makes the setup much more versatile. They also feature 3 selectable power modes via a magnet switch, so you can adjust the amperage draw and power output.

Finally, these lights just fit the direction of my build. My Tacoma is not being built as a basic daily driver with a few accessories thrown on. I want it to be unique, recognizable, functional, and premium. The Phoenix XLs match that vision.

Installation & Wiring Overview

Switch-Pros SP9100 On Hybrid Tacoma

For my setup, the Phoenix XLs were mounted as A-pillar/ditch lights. This placement makes a lot of sense for how I use the truck because it gives the lights a strong forward-facing position while also adding a more aggressive look to the front end. They are larger due to the massive output, so mounting them on the A-Pillar is not for everyone. I just installed a Backwoods Adventure Mods bumper and I’m thinking of putting them there now that I have more mounting space.

The installation itself depends heavily on how you want to wire them. Since these are high-output lights, I would not treat the electrical side as an afterthought. Each Phoenix XL is rated at 191 watts and can draw between 12.5 and 15.3 amps, depending on the selected power mode.

For my truck, the lights were wired into a Switch-Pros SP9100 system. I like this setup because it keeps everything clean and controllable from inside the cab. As my build continues to grow, having a proper switch panel makes the entire lighting system easier to manage. This is also where planning matters. With the Phoenix XLs, rear-facing lights, future roof lighting, and other accessories, wiring can quickly become messy without a clear plan. A clean switch panel setup helps prevent that.

You will want to make sure you have the right parts before starting the install. If you are comfortable with wiring, this is manageable, but if you are not, this is one of those installs where using a reputable shop may be worth it. With lower-output lights, you can sometimes get away with a more basic approach. With lights this powerful, I would rather have the wiring done correctly from the beginning. Proper wiring, proper fusing, and clean routing are all important.

Overall, once mounted and wired correctly, the setup feels very clean. The lights on the truck look intentional, and being able to control them through the Switch-Pros makes them much easier to use.

Real-World Use & Light Output

The first thing you notice about the Phoenix XLs is the sheer intensity. Unlike basic pod lights that only illuminate the immediate bumper area, these feature a focused spot beam designed to throw light deep down the trail. For night exploring, that long-range visibility is a necessity, making these feel like serious driving lights rather than cosmetic accessories.

The multi-mode functionality is where these lights truly shine…

  • White Light: Delivers maximum output and exceptional visibility for clear, open trails.
  • Amber Light: Instantly cuts through dust, haze, snow, or rain without causing blinding glare.
  • Amber DRL: A sleek daytime running feature that I find myself using constantly.

The ability to cycle through these modes with the click of a button is a game-changer. I find myself running the amber DRL more often than I thought I would. While the Phoenix XLs are likely overkill for someone just looking for a casual ditch light, they are the perfect premium setup for anyone demanding serious output, versatility, and build quality.

Final Thoughts

Rigid Industries Phoenix XL Pods Amber Output

The RIGID Phoenix XLs are exactly the kind of lighting upgrade I wanted for this build. They are aggressive, powerful, premium, and extremely functional, which is the balance I have been trying to create with my 4th Gen Tacoma TRD Pro.

What stands out most to me is that these lights do not feel like a basic accessory. They feel like a serious part of the build. The 7-inch size gives the front end a much more aggressive presence, and the output is genuinely impressive. The amber and white output options are one of my favorite parts. Being able to run amber in adverse conditions and then switch to a brighter white for maximum distance and visibility makes the Phoenix XLs feel very well thought out and extremely versatile.

The build quality also matches what I would expect from RIGID. These lights feel solid, substantial, and purpose-built. For a build that is meant to be both functional and eye-catching, that matters.

With that said, these are definitely a premium lighting option. They are not cheap, and for some people, they may honestly be overkill. If you are just looking for a simple, budget-friendly ditch light setup, the standard Phoenix Pods, which are also impressive, would be a better fit. Given the price, size, output, and wiring considerations, the XLs make more sense for frequent off-roaders.

But if your goal is a high-end rig and you want a worthy lighting setup, they are absolutely worth considering.
