Improving Rear End Damping With A New Bump Stop Tech

Everyone wants the fancy, shiny lift kit. But many forget that it doesn’t end there. For optimal performance, you’ll need some supporting mods. One of those mods are bump stops. The factory ones get the job done – but usually not with higher end performance in mind, or the forces we subject our trucks too when off-roading and adding more travel and weight.

Upgrading your bump stops helps to protect suspension and frame components, improve ride quality, and help maintain stability.

Perry Parts is a newer option to the scene, but they’ve had great reviews and a lot of happy customers. They use a special type of 3D printing to manufacture their products, which allows for a high level of refinement and a very affordable option compared to what else is available out there.

What Are They & Why Upgrade?

Upgraded Bump Stops For 4G Tacoma

Factory bumps have their limitations. While they work somewhat well for a stock daily that isn’t being used hard, once you start modifying your truck an upgraded is necessary. With a factory set, you risk harsh bottom outs and a lack of damping.

Cases where upgrading really shines…

  • during off-road articulation
  • while carrying heavy loads
  • big hits on or off pavement

With Perry Parts, you get dynamic compression damping. Unlike traditional materials, Perry uses internal air passages and a webbed design, which is made via Fused Granular Fabrication (FGF). This allows air to be forced through tuned channels to dissipate energy and smooth impacts. The result is a progressive and controlled response.

Strength and soft suspension feel are easy to tailor with the 3D printing process. Calibration is essential for the differences between trucks. Nothing is one size fits all. There’s also no guessing. Each stop is specifically made for individual geometry, weight, and leverage – which results in effectively perfect engagement and function.

And not to worry – there’s no durability issues. These are industrial grade polymers tested at over 100k compression cycles, built to survive excess loads, and backed by a no questions asked 2-year warranty. Perry products are dyno-tested and 3rd party verified to outperform.

Note: The 4G Tacoma does not have front bump stops. They are contained within the strut assembly.

Install Overview

Installing Bump Stops On 4th Gen Tacoma

I’ll keep this section brief. Installation is especially easy on the 5-link setups on the new Tacoma. The bump stop is no longer under the U-bolts, but simply bolted to the frame.

It helps to pull the wheel off for access, but you could get away from taking it off if you absolutely wanted to avoid it. There are two bolts that attach the Perry bumps. The reuse the factory holes in the frame. Just remove the factory ones with their brackets, and mount the Perrys.

Compared To OEM

A quick side by side for comparison. As you can easily see, there is more material on the Perry bumps and it is taller overall.

The factory bump stops leave much to be desired. Again, they work, but they don’t provide smooth damping the same way Perry does. They’re also made from a uniform rubber-like material, which isn’t very pliable and likely has no progressive qualities.

On & Off-Road Performance

Bump stops can be hard to review sometimes. They’re really only noticeable when the suspension comes close to or when it is, bottoming out. This happens a little sooner with Perry Parts since they are taller and engage earlier. This is a good thing though, you have a greater window of engagement and a smoother ride overall.

On road you feel the difference over those big dips in the road and the random pothole that came out of nowhere. When the factory stops are pushed to their limit, the bottom out is harsh and feels like you might break something. With the upgraded set, you get closer to the feeling of a bottomless suspension. Meaning its response is so much more controlled, you feel like the shocks have more room to travel and absorb impacts.

Off-road is where they really start to shine. We’re usually much more loaded with weight, and that brings the frame closer to the axle. This was much more evident when we took our most recent trip to Montana. I had added a RiGd UltraSwing and a GFC V2 Pro, not to mention all of our gear. We hit a ton of uneven terrain. We did 75+ miles off-road and I can’t pinpoint a single time where we had a harsh bottom out. The truck stayed in control and felt great. I’m only running a Peak Suspension Trail Kit (which retains factory springs and shocks), so the added benefit of the bumps was easier to notice.

I’ve also towed my Boony Stomper trailer, and the bump stops helped with the added weight and stability there as well.

Final Thoughts

Perry Parts Bump Stop Review

I’m glad I finally got a chance to get my hands on a set of these. I’ve seen a lot of buzz and feedback on Perry Parts.

Overall, these bump stops get the job done. A relatively straightforward mod. Perry has certainly made a splash with their approach.
