An All-New Suspension System From Ironman – First Look!

When building a Tacoma, upgrading the suspension is probably one of the most important modifications you can make. Arguably, the kit you choose sets the tone for the rest of the build. Whether you’re into overlanding, loading up your truck with gear, tackling tough trails, or want a better overall driving experience, the stock suspension can only take you so far.

There are many different lift kits on the market, but recently, Ironman released their IM2.5 kit. It promises improved off-road capability and a smoother and more controlled ride on the road. After installing this kit on my 3rd Gen and logging my first 500 miles, I have some initial thoughts on just how good it is.

Overview

IM2.5 Rear Shocks

The IM2.5 is Ironman’s newest suspension offering, designed specifically for daily-driven trucks and SUVs with added weight that demand more than the stock suspension can handle. The “2.5” refers to the 2.5-inch shock body, larger than most standard shock bodies. This helps improve heat dissipation and performance on and off-road. It also features advanced monotube technology and precision valving to provide a comfortable ride on the road and unmatched performance when hitting the trails.

Another huge selling point when comparing these to shocks from big-name brands like Fox and King is that the IM2.5 shocks are designed to be maintenance-free, eliminating the need for regular servicing. That said, they are fully rebuildable if you ever need to way down the road.

Ironman 4x4 IM2.5 Coilover

On the style side of things, Ironman comes in strong with a heavy rebrand and moves away from the all lime green springs and decals (which is a huge plus in my books). Now, you’ll notice a black and gunmetal design with subtle green details for a pop of color. The shock bodies are made from aircraft-grade aluminum and feature a very slight green tint, which I thought looked awesome.

Technical Specifications

  • 2.5″ Monotube Aircraft-Grade Aluminum Construction – Offers 4X better heat dissipation and 30X weight savings compared to other shocks.
  • 57mm Billet Aluminum Piston – Offers 60% more surface area which enables precise valve tuning for enhanced ride comfort and control.
  • Velocity Sensitive Design – The monotube damper adjusts to changing terrain and provides a plush smooth ride on the highway and controlled ride off-road.
  • Type 2 Anodized Corrosion Resistant Finish – Military grade corrosion resistant finish to withstand extreme conditions and elements.
  • Adjustable Coilover System – Features an ACME threaded body to allow for fine-tuning ride height.
  • Fits 2005-2023 Toyota Tacoma (2nd Gen Tacoma will need modifications to the rear shock mount to fit the rear shocks, according to Ironman).

What I Chose

I picked up the Stage 2 Lift Kit, which included…

  • Front IM2.5 coilovers
  • Front sway bar spacer kit
  • Carrier bearing drop spacer
  • Rear IM2.5 shocks
  • Rear leaf springs (I selected the heavy-duty springs)
  • Rear U-bolt kit
  • Rear polyurethane bushing kit
  • Pro Forge upper control arms (only available in the Stage 2 kit).

When you break it down, especially since leaf springs and control arms are included, its a great value.

Installation Experience & Initial Setup

Ironman IM2.5 Coilovers Being Installed On Toyota Tacoma

I had the suspension installed at a local shop, but from what I gathered and my experience installing other lift kits, the process is straightforward and the same as any other kit. The coilovers came pre-assembled, making the installation much easier, and everything fit without modifying anything.

An alignment was needed afterwards, which is always the case after suspension work.

As soon as my truck was back on the ground, I noticed the lift was definitely taller than my previous setup and netted around 3 inches of lift in the front. Since I went with the heavy-duty leaf springs from Ironman, the rear end was also taller, which provided noticeable rake. I ended up taking out a leaf spring from the pack, as the ride was pretty stiff in the rear with only my tent and bed rack (about 250 lbs).

First Driving Impressions

Overland Tacoma Build With New Ironman IM2.5 Suspension

After installing the lift, I had a 3-hour drive home, which really gave me a good feel for how the IM2.5 suspension feels on the road. Initially, I was very impressed comparing them to my Eibach Stage 1 lift that was previously on the truck.

The first thing I noticed was just how planted and controlled the truck felt. Small bumps and potholes are now much more muted compared to the old kit. It has a firm feeling, but is not harsh. Overall, I would say it feels more like a truck but is not uncomfortable in any way.

Body roll was also reduced, and the nose dive under braking was almost completely gone. The ride has been smooth and predictable, even with bigger tires, added weight, and no front sway bar.

At highway speeds, the IM2.5 really shines. It kept my truck stable, especially in crosswinds, which were heavy due to an incoming storm. There doesn’t seem to be a bouncy or floaty feeling, and the suspension soaks up joints or uneven pavement like a champ.

Pros & Cons

Ironman IM2.5 Shocks Review

So far, I can safely say that I am extremely impressed with the IM2.5 kit and plan on having it on my truck for years to come. It provides a firm, but comfortable and predictable ride. I can’t wait to test them out more on some tougher trails, but so far, I think I have a solid foundation for some pros and cons.

Pros

  • Huge improvement in ride quality over an entry-level kit.
  • Better handling and less body roll on the road.
  • Handles extra weight with ease.
  • Great bang for your buck, especially when comparing it to budget-friendly and even top-of-the-line kits.
  • It looks beefy and is extremely well-built and durable.

Cons

  • Slightly firmer ride than stock, especially when unloaded.
  • The full kit doesn’t come with UCAs (stage 1), but they are highly recommended, especially at the lift height.

Final Thoughts

Ironman 4x4 IM2.5 Lift Kit

Overall, the IM2.5 lift kit flips the script on the Tacoma suspension systems. At an affordable price point for a full suspension setup packed with high-end features and built to last, this kit is definitely one to consider when thinking of a new suspension upgrade on your truck. I have been extremely happy with the new IM2.5 suspension’s initial ride quality, durability, and features, and can’t wait to test it more on some trails!

I have their foam cell pros on my 2008 Tacoma TRD sport. It sounds like their new setup rides similar to what I have already. But I’d be interested in a direct comparison.

Have you ever had the foam cell pros?

My truck is not loaded down and I have their 3” dynamic leaf springs and coilovers.

I also have the FC Pros on my 2020 Off Road. The ride on the highway is solid, no complaints. I can’t complain about them off road either. However, this new design sounds legit and i really like the new look. I hope we get some more reviews on here so we can get a good comparison.

Hey Marcus! I personally have never had the Foam Cell Pros, but I have had a few buddies who have. They say it rides very different and that these were similar to the Dobinsons IM2.5 suspension.
