Is An Aluminum Removable Retractable Tonneau Cover Worth It?

When I got my 4th Gen Tacoma, I started researching the immediate “must-dos”. You know what I’m talking about, the usual wheels, tires, tint, etc. Eventually, I came to tonneau covers. I spent days, maybe weeks, trying to decide on what the best option was for me. I was leaning towards a traditional hard-sided tri-fold cover, as it’s a proven and reliable solution for locking up your gear in the back of the truck bed. I’ve had 5 different versions of them from various manufacturers over the years on all my trucks.

But then something crept into the back of my mind… What about those newer fancy retractable covers? Those are sexy, but that appeal comes at a price. At $2,000-ish (give or take if you can snag one on sale), that’s a lot of money for a cover. That’s lift kit or wheel-and-tire money.

However, after installing the new RetraxPRO EZ-OFF on my 2024 Tacoma’s 5-foot bed and living with it for a couple of months, I get it, big time. Not everyone will agree with me, and that’s fine, but they would if they could. So, if you’re considering a tonneau cover and wondering if an all-aluminum retractable one is worth the premium (it’s worth noting that it’s now also easily removable), this review is for you.

The Tonneau Cover Reality Check

Removeable & Retractable Bed Cover For Tacoma

Before we talk specifically about the EZ-OFF, let’s break down tonneau cover 101.

First, no tonneau cover is truly weatherproof. They’re all water-resistant to varying degrees, but none are truly waterproof. Now that being said, some are better than others. So if you live in an area with heavy rain or snow, expect some moisture intrusion. The RetraxPRO is at the top of the food chain because it legitimately handles water better than most.

Secondly, and this is critical, tonneau covers are a compromise. You’re trading valuable bed real estate for security and weather protection. Even the “full access” covers still require opening or removing something to access your entire bed. You must accept this reality before investing in one.

Now, with those truths established, let me explain why I still think this one is the apex predator, especially for the 4th Gen Tacoma with a short bed.

Why Retractable? Why Removable?

New RetraxPro EZ-OFF Cover Canister

Plenty of tonneau covers come with all sorts of options, so why retractable? And more importantly, why pay extra for the removable feature?

Retractable

Retractable covers offer the best balance of security, convenience, and bed access. Soft fabric tri-folds are available at a lower price point, but they are less secure and wear out faster. Hard tri-folds are more secure but still have visible seams and fold bulk. Roll-up covers are convenient but offer almost no security.

Retractable covers seal better, look cleaner, and provide infinitely adjustable positions. Need to haul something 2 feet tall? Open the cover halfway. Need full bed access? Retract it completely. The flexibility is unmatched.

Removable

Here’s what separates it from the pack. Traditional retractable covers have a canister at the front of the bed that permanently occupies 10-12 inches of bed space. Even when the cover is fully retracted, the canister remains, reducing your usable bed length. For the Tacoma’s 5-foot bed (60.5 inches actual), losing a foot of length is significant. That’s the difference between fitting a mountain bike with the front wheel on versus having to remove it, or a sheet of plywood lying flat versus having to angle it.

The new EZ-OFF system lets you remove the entire canister assembly in under 60 seconds without tools. When you need 100% bed access, you actually get 100% bed access. When you don’t, the cover operates like any other premium retractable. This isn’t a gimmick; it’s the answer to the fundamental flaw of retractable tonneau covers.

What Makes The RetraxPRO Different

The ReTraxPro is RealTruck’s (parent company of Retrax) attempt to solve the canister problem without compromising build quality or operation. The result is a cover that functions as a traditional retractable 95% of the time, but can be removed when you need maximum bed space.

RetraxPro EZ-OFF Cover Mechanism & Lock

The key innovation is the patented EZ-OFF lift handle system. Two spring-loaded handles integrate into the canister housing along the track rails. Unlatch the canister, then pick it up by the handles, lift the entire assembly out of the bed rails, and set it aside. The canister is wrapped in a bed carpet for protection.

When you’re ready to reinstall, drop it back into the rails and push the handles down. The system clicks into place, and then you simply latch it up; that’s it. No bolts, no clamps, no tools. The cover itself is a double-walled aluminum construction with sealed ball bearing rollers. The slats are powder-coated matte black and rated to support over 500 pounds. RealTruck tested it against grizzly bears, yes, actual grizzly bears, by filling a truck bed with honey and letting bears attempt to break in. The bears lost, and the cover won.

The TraxLatch handle is key-lockable and operates smoothly. The cover can be stopped at any position or cinched against cargo for securing odd-shaped items in the bed. The water management system drains through integrated tubes in the rails.

It’s a legitimately well-engineered product, maybe the best I’ve ever seen for a tonneau cover. Is it worth the premium price? You bet.

The EZ-Off System: Does It Actually Work?

RetraxPro Canister

This is the big question! Or, in this case, the one question that costs about $400 extra vs non-removable retractable covers. The quick answer is yes, it does work, and it’s also really easy.

Removal Process

  1. Fully retract the cover into the canister
  2. Unlatch the canister from both track rails
  3. Slide in the EZ-OFF handles and click them down
  4. Lift the canister assembly straight up and out
  5. Set it aside on its wrapped carpet base

Total time: 45-60 seconds. No tools required.

Reinstallation Process

  1. Align the canister with the rails
  2. Lower it into position
  3. Push down both EZ-OFF handles until they click, and remove the handles
  4. Re-latch the canister on both sides to the track rails

Total time: 30 seconds.

The system is basically foolproof. My 16-year-old son removed and reinstalled it on his second attempt with zero assistance. If you can operate a ratchet strap, you can operate the EZ-OFF system.

Weight Consideration

The canister assembly weighs approximately 60-70 pounds. It’s manageable for one person, but easier with two. I’m reasonably fit, and I can remove and install it solo without issue. If you’re smaller or have mobility limitations, get a second set of hands.

The carpet-wrapped canister works well for storage. You can set it in your garage, lean it against a wall, or even leave it in the bed if you’re hauling something short-term. The carpet protects the powder-coated shell of the canister and also keeps it clean.

Real-World Use

Here’s the reality: I’ve only removed the canister maybe 2-3 times over the past four months. Most weeks, the cover stays installed and operates like a traditional retractable. But those few times mattered. Hauling lumber, moving furniture, random gear when out running errands, situations where I needed every inch of bed space. Without the EZ-OFF system, I would have been forced to leave the cover partially open or remove the entire cover, including the rails. The EZ-OFF system isn’t something you’ll use every day. It’s something that’s available when you need it, and when that necessity pops up, you’ll be incredibly grateful you have it.

Construction & Build Quality

Rolling Bed Cover From RealTruck

Let’s talk materials and construction, because this is where you’re paying for premium quality versus settling for adequate.

The slats are double-walled aluminum, not single-wall like cheaper retractables. Double-wall construction adds rigidity, reduces flex, and improves sound dampening. When you close this cover, it sounds solid and not tinny or hollow.

Metal Tonneau Cover With Locks For Toyota Tacoma

The powder-coat finish is matte black and applied in a thick coat. I have no concerns about running it through the seasons in the PNW rain, road salt, and trail dust. The finish quality matches OEM components. The rails are extruded aluminum with integrated T-slot channels for mounting a multitude of rack accessories. This cannot be underestimated, as this feature is super cool and gives you immense versatility, from full-on MOLLE panel overlanding racks to a clean and simple cargo rack for kayaks, bike racks, or cargo boxes. It’s a killer feature that the old tri-folds simply do not have.

The CoreTrax sealed ball-bearing rollers are stainless steel and permanently sealed, requiring no maintenance. No lubrication, no cleaning, no adjustment, they just work. The cover glides smoothly even in freezing temperatures.

The EZ-OFF lift handles are spring-loaded and beefy. They’re not flimsy plastic, they’re ergonomic with rubber grips. They click decisively when locked and unlocked. And here’s another thing I appreciate… RealTruck is the manufacturer. You’re not dealing with a middleman. The warranty is direct, customer service is responsive, and pricing is transparent. When something costs this much, knowing you’re buying from the source matters because it means they have the horsepower to back the warranty.

Installation Overview

Tools Required

  • Socket set (10mm, 13mm most common)
  • Torque wrench (recommended but not required)
  • Measuring tape

RetraxPro EZ-OFF Parts

RealTruck delivers this in some of the most pro-level premium boxing I have seen. Nothing was damaged, scratched, or dented upon inspection after opening.

RetraxPro Hardware

RealTruck describes that installation can be done in “under 60 minutes with minimal tools”. If you’re experienced with truck modifications and have the right tools, yes, that timeframe is doable. However, if this is your first tonneau cover installation, plan for 90-120 minutes. Still, the process is straightforward and simple.

Installation Steps

  1. Clean the bed rails thoroughly
  2. Position the side rails and mark placement
  3. Clamp the tonneau rails to the bed rails (four clamps per side, no drilling)
  4. Install drainage tubes (pssst…I didn’t)
  5. Drop the canister assembly into the rails
  6. Adjust and tighten everything down
  7. Test fit and operation

Installation Tips I Learned From The Video

  • Preassembling the latch mechanisms to the tonneau rails is super easy and straightforward.
  • The OEM bedrails mate with the RetraxPRO clamps very simply, but you have to remove the Toyota plastic tie-down cleats first.
  • Make sure you measure both sides of the tonneau rails near the cab vs at the end toward the tailgate. As long as the distance between the two matches and has enough clearance, the cover will open and close smoothly.

The Post Installation Reality

There’s really not much to it.  If you’re comfortable with basic truck modifications, you’ll be fine. If you’ve never installed anything on your truck, maybe consider paying a shop or finding a buddy who is. Most shops charge $150- $250 for tonneau cover installation. A case of beer for your buddy might cost $30-$40… maybe throw in an extra $20 to buy him a pizza, too, if you’re feeling charitable. The point is you shouldn’t be intimidated; it’s pretty easy.

Living With It: The Good, Bad & Honest

RetraxPro EZ-OFF FRC-4000 Tonneau Cover

After a couple of months of daily use, here’s what I’ve learned about living with this cover…

The Good

  • The cover operates smoothly every single time. No sticking, no binding, no adjustment needed. The sealed rollers just work in all temperatures.
  • Water management is excellent. I’ve driven through heavy PNW snow and rainstorms and never had standing water in the bed. Minimal intrusion around the tailgate seal, which is expected (in general).
  • Security is rock solid. The key lock TraxLatch handle works well, and the double-walled slats feel robust. I did have to adjust the locking pins on each side, but that’s normal. Could someone break in with a gnarly crowbar? Sure, with enough determination. But it’s a significant deterrent compared to almost every other option on the market.
  • The matte black finish looks OEM and is very high-end. It doesn’t scream “aftermarket” or look cheap. It complements the Tacoma’s lines perfectly. I think it’s only a matter of time before Toyota or other truck makers start offering this as an add-on to certain trim levels.
  • The ability to remove the canister when needed is genuinely useful. It’s not a gimmick. When you need it, you will appreciate it.
  • Zero effects on how the Tacoma rides/drives, and road noise is non-existent. I don’t feel or hear anything.
  • Some folks claim the aluminum slats create some noise resonance. But I don’t hear anything at all.
  • Some people report better MPGs due to better aerodynamics. I can’t comment, because I haven’t tracked it.

The Bad (but not actually bad)

  • At $2,400, this tonneau cover might exceed your budget. You’re paying premium pricing for a premium product and features.
  • The Toyota plastic tie-down on the passenger side had to be removed as it’s directly in the path of the locking mechanism when opening and closing the cover.
  • The cover does take up real estate in the truck bed when fully retracted/opened. This is common for all retractable covers, but worth noting. You lose about 10 inches of bed length when the cover is retracted but still installed. There is about 8-10 inches of clearance below the canister for items that are not very tall.
  • The canister is heavy. 60-70 pounds is manageable but not trivial. If you’re planning to remove and reinstall frequently, factor in the physical effort and the need for an extra set of hands.

Final Thoughts

RealTruck Retractable Tonneau Cover On Tacoma

This tonneau cover is not for everyone’s budget. The cost is real, and if budget is your primary concern, there are more reasonably priced options that will definitely get the job done.

If you need maximum bed access 24/7, don’t buy a retractable cover; get a hard tri-fold or roll-up cover instead. For 90% of daily use, the canister stays installed, and you use it like any retractable tonneau cover. For that 10%, when you need maximum space, you remove the canister. That flexibility is why I chose this cover over traditional retractables and hard tri-folds, especially for the Tacoma’s smaller 5-foot bed.

So, if you want the premium retractable cover with the flexibility to remove the canister when needed, the EZ-OFF is the best of both worlds. It offers the ease of use of a retractable tonneau with the versatility of a removable tri-fold. It’s extremely well-built, functions flawlessly, and solves the traditional retractable’s biggest limitation. It also just looks badass.

Thanks for reading. Be kind to yourself and others. The world needs more of it.
