Low-Profile, Premium Rack Worthy Of The New Tacoma’s Higher Price Tag

When it comes to roof racks for the Toyota Tacoma platform, there is no shortage of options available. From low-profile racks designed for aesthetics to heavy-duty systems built for overland use, the market offers a wide range of solutions. The challenge is identifying a system that delivers strength, modularity, ease of use, and clean integration without introducing unnecessary weight or complexity.

After installing the DRIFTR Roof Rack from Backwoods Adventure Mods, it quickly became clear that this system was designed with those exact priorities in mind. Much like their bed rack system, the DRIFTR stands out not solely because of one specific feature, but rather how well it integrates multiple design elements into a cohesive and highly functional platform.

Low Profile Roof Rack For 2024+ Tacoma

What drew me to this system is the same philosophy that influenced my decision about the bed rack; it is built to do everything a roof rack should, and to do it in a way that feels refined and intentional. It is lightweight, structurally sound, highly modular, and visually integrated in a way that complements the Tacoma rather than overwhelming it. On top of that, this system is extremely lightweight compared to others. This is a HUGE piece of a build to a lot of people, myself included.

With the rack now installed, this review reflects hands-on experience and focuses on real-world usability, design execution, and how the system compares within a competitive segment.

About The Brand

Backwoods DRIFTR Rack

Backwoods Adventure Mods is a company built around real-world off-road and overland experience. Their products are not designed in isolation; they are developed by individuals who actively use them in the environments for which they are intended. Originally a small fabrication operation focused on custom bumpers, the company has grown into a well-established manufacturer of a wide range of off-road accessories. Based in Springdale, Arkansas, Backwoods continues to design and manufacture products with a strong focus on quality, durability, and functional design.

What sets the brand apart is its emphasis on building systems that integrate seamlessly with one another. Rather than producing standalone components, Backwoods develops products that work together as part of a larger ecosystem. This is especially evident when pairing the DRIFTR Roof Rack with their bed rack system and topping it with the DRTFR topper.

Installation Overview

Backwoods Roof Rack For Double Cab 4th Gen Tacoma

The DRIFTR has a fully bolt-on design, requiring no major modifications to the vehicle. This is an important consideration for many, including myself. I have mounted several roof racks on previous vehicles, and drilling into your roof carries a huge risk if not done correctly.

Installation is straightforward and well thought out. The components are precisely machined, and all mounting points align as expected. The system is designed to eliminate guesswork, allowing for a clean and efficient installation process. Notably, the packaging and organization of components are excellent, and each piece is protected and arranged to simplify assembly, reinforcing the attention to detail that Backwoods applies to its products.

With two people, the installation process can be completed efficiently with minimal complications. It is also manageable as a solo install, though having an additional set of hands is helpful for positioning and securing the rack during assembly. I ended up installing the roof rack solo in under 2 hours.

Backwoods provides instructional videos on mounting their products that are extremely informative and helpful if you get stuck along the way, though the install is pretty simple. Check out their installation video for the 4th Gen Tacoma rack.

One thing I cannot compliment enough is the hardware and components they provide you. I have installed several roof racks that do not include any silicone for installation. Though this seems minute and something you can pick up locally, it is provided in the kit from Backwoods, which shows something you will consistently see with them, and that is attention to detail, every detail.

Construction, Design & Specs

Backwoods Adventure Mods DRIFTR Roof Rack & Bed Rack Topper Rack

The DRIFTR Roof Rack is constructed primarily from aluminum, which helps keep overall weight low while maintaining structural strength. This is critical for roof-mounted systems, where added weight can impact vehicle handling and center of gravity. Once installed, the rack feels extremely solid. There is no noticeable flex across the structure, and the crossbars provide a stable platform for mounting gear and accessories.

The design incorporates multiple mounting points and accessory channels, enabling a wide range of configurations without modification. This modular approach is one of the defining strengths of the system. They also leave cutouts for Agency 6 grab handles across the rack, which is another awesome attention to detail.

The powder-coated finish is applied consistently. Edges are clean, hardware interfaces are well-defined, and the overall presentation reflects a high standard of manufacturing quality. From a design standpoint, the rack maintains a low-profile, streamlined appearance. It integrates cleanly with the Tacoma’s roofline, avoiding the bulky or overly aggressive look that some roof racks introduce.

Accessory Support & Modularity

DRIFTR Roof Rack Accessory Panels

The DRIFTR Roof Rack is designed as a modular platform, allowing for a wide range of accessory integrations.

This includes mounting options for…

  • Roof-mounted storage systems
  • Recovery gear
  • Lighting setups
  • Recreational equipment such as bikes, kayaks, or cargo carriers
  • Rooftop tents
  • Awnings
  • My personal favorite, the Universal Deck Panels

The mounting system is intuitive and flexible, allowing accessories to be positioned and adjusted without difficulty. This makes it easy to tailor the rack to specific needs, whether for daily use or more involved setups.

One of the most notable aspects is how well the rack integrates with other Backwoods products. When paired with their bed rack system, it creates a cohesive platform that expands the truck’s overall capability.

Universal Deck Accessory Panels

Backwoods Roof Rack Flat Deck Panels With Cutout For Mounts & Tie Downs

One addition that significantly expands the system’s capabilities are the Accessory Deck Panels. These panels transform the roof rack from a traditional crossbar-style system into a more complete platform. When installed, they create a fully walkable deck surface while still maintaining a low-profile design. What makes these panels particularly useful is how they enhance both usability and mounting flexibility. They are constructed from lightweight 5-gauge aluminum yet strong enough to support standing weight, adding functionality when loading gear or accessing equipment on the roof.

From a mounting standpoint, the panels feature top-facing cutouts that accept widely used systems such as L-Track, E-Track, and standard carriage bolts. This allows gear to be secured entirely from the top, eliminating the need to reach underneath the rack or work around crossbars during installation.

The panels are also available in multiple sizes, allowing them to be configured around other roof-mounted components such as cargo boxes or solar panels. This flexibility reinforces the system’s overall modular nature and provides a level of customization that goes beyond standard rack configurations. In practical terms, these deck panels elevate the roof rack from a mounting solution to a true working surface, further reinforcing the idea that this system is designed to adapt and evolve with the user’s needs.

Should You Buy One?

4th Gen Tacoma With Roof Rack, Bed Rack, Topper Rack Combo

For those considering a roof rack for their Tacoma, the decision ultimately comes down to what you expect out of the system and how you plan to use it over time.

The Backwoods DRIFTR Roof Rack is clearly positioned as a premium solution, and it reflects that in both its design and execution. Rather than focusing on being solely the most affordable option, it prioritizes build quality, modularity, and long-term usability, and that is something I love about it.

This is the kind of system that makes the most sense for someone who wants a rack that can serve multiple purposes without needing to be replaced or reworked down the line. It offers the flexibility to start simple and expand over time, which adds value beyond the initial install. This is a rack you buy when you want the best of the best, no headache, and no need to upgrade/change it out in the future.

Lightweight Aluminum Roof Rack For 4th Gen Tacoma

It is particularly well-suited for…

  • Owners who want a clean, integrated look that matches the vehicle
  • Those planning to add accessories or build out their setup gradually
  • Users who value lightweight construction without sacrificing strength
  • Anyone looking for a system that feels cohesive, purpose-built, and premium

From a practical standpoint, this rack feels less like a short-term upgrade and more like a long-term platform. It is designed to adapt alongside the vehicle, rather than limit it. If your goal is to invest in a system that delivers both performance and flexibility while maintaining a refined design, this is a strong option that stands out for how well it integrates those elements.

Final Thoughts

Backwoods Adventure Mods DRIFTR Roof Rack System On 4th Gen Tacoma

As with any premium system, the DRIFTR Roof Rack is priced on par with other choices in this category. The cost reflects the level of engineering, material quality, and overall execution. Backwoods has earned that right by a long shot after my time so far with the rack and the ecosystem they offer through compatibility with their bed rack system and more.

For users who are simply looking for a basic rack, there are more affordable alternatives. However, for those seeking a system that offers long-term flexibility, structural confidence, and clean integration, this rack stands out as a strong option, if not in my opinion, the best option.

What makes this system particularly compelling is its balance. It does not prioritize one feature at the expense of others. Instead, it delivers a well-rounded solution that performs consistently across multiple categories. I have never found a company that prioritizes its customers as well, provides outstanding customer service, and has such incredible attention to detail as Backwoods. I say that confidently and proudly.

From a long-term perspective, the rack provides a foundation that can evolve alongside the user’s needs. It does not limit configuration options and integrates seamlessly with additional components, allowing you, your rig, and the rack to grow together into something special.

Overall, the DRIFTR Roof Rack reflects the same design philosophy seen across Backwoods products. It is functional, well-engineered, and built with real-world use in mind. For those looking to expand the capabilities of their Tacoma without compromising design or usability, this system is a highly competitive, well-executed option that I HIGHLY recommend.
