Purpose-Built, Super High Clearance Bumper For Venturing Off-Road

If you’re looking for a high-clearance front bumper that still maintains a low-profile appearance, the C4 Rock Runner bumper gets the job done and then some. As one of the lightest full-steel bumper options on the market, it’s much more manageable for a DIY install than some heavier alternatives.

This bumper offers a strong balance between functionality and style, with its high-clearance design and improved trail capability, yet still looks clean and aggressive without feeling oversized or bulky. Let’s get into why I chose to run this bumper and some key considerations.

Key Features

C4 Rock Runner Bumper Options

There are several customization options available. You can choose between plate and tube sides (featured here), whether to add a bull bar, and whether to keep the factory crossmember or delete it. Keeping the crossmember simplifies installation and still improves front-end clearance over the stock bumper. Deleting it gives you improved clearance and a more aggressive approach angle over obstacles. There’s also flexibility – you’re not locked into one setup forever. If the build changes over time, you can switch the optioned sides without replacing the entire bumper.

The installation process was fairly straightforward, even for someone not used to working on their own truck. After cutting the factory bumper, removing the excess plastic, and taking off the crash bar assembly, most of the work centered around the crossmember delete and relocating the power steering cooler. For a copy of the written installation guide, check here.

Removing the factory crossmember was one of the most intimidating parts of the install. An angle grinder probably wasn’t the best tool for the job, but I was using what I had available. Taking your time during this step and making sure everything is cut cleanly is important for proper fitment.

During the power steering cooler relocation, make sure you pay close attention to clearance and airflow. Pressing in the radiator fins can affect airflow more than expected… Ask me how I know. It’s also a good idea to watch multiple installation videos in full before starting the project. I overlooked brackets that could have prevented my issues.

Outside of the cutting and relocation work, the installation was very manageable as a DIY project and didn’t require any overly specialized tools. The lighter weight also made it much easier for me to lift and position on my own.

Winch Compatibility

C4 Rock Runner Front Bumper Winch Compatibility

The Rock Runner bumper is winch-compatible, but its low-profile design leaves little space for a winch setup. Winch dimensions and control box placement are important. Depending on the winch used, relocating the control box may be necessary to ensure everything fits properly.

For additional fitment notes, C4 mentions the following…

  • The optional Front Skid Plate with Cross-Member delete offers additional clearance
  • Fits most winches 8-12k. Winches capable of relocating the control box are recommended. Confirmed fitment on Smittybilt X20 & Warn VR series
  • Synthetic rope winches & hawse-style fairleads for best functionality

If a relocation bracket is being used, it’s worth taking the time to prep and paint it before installation. Mine eventually developed surface rust that could have easily been prevented. Also, for my setup, some trimming was required to access the winch clutch lever. It’s a good idea to test-fit everything with the bumper positioned but not fully mounted on the truck whenever possible.

You might also want to consider completing headlight upgrades or any work that requires removing the grille. Once the Rock Runner is installed, the grille can’t be removed without partially dropping the bumper. Not a huge deal, but something to think about that could save extra work later. If you don’t plan on adding a winch, the bumper includes a cover plate for the winch opening.

Pros & Cons

C4 Rock Runner Bumper With Pod Lights

The Rock Runner bumper does a good job combining functionality and style. It gives the truck a more aggressive look without feeling bulky or oversized, and the level of customization allows the bumper to work with a wide range of builds. The lighter weight is a huge advantage, and the increased clearance and approach angle are immediately noticeable compared to the factory bumper.

High Clearance Cross Member Delete Front Bumper For 3rd Gen Tacoma

As with most aftermarket bumpers, there are a few trade-offs to consider…

  • Winch space is limited, so fitment takes some planning
  • The installation process is straightforward and doesn’t require many specialized tools, but it can be time-consuming, especially when working alone
  • Pay close attention to line routing and clearance to avoid rubbing issues later
  • Consider your aftermarket lighting plans. There aren’t any dedicated mounting locations, so you might need to get creative with your setup

Final Thoughts

C4 Rock Runner Cross Member Delete With Frame Reinforcements

After running the C4 Rock Runner front bumper since its release, it still fits my build really well. It adds clearance, improves approach angle, and provides excellent recovery capability. The more aggressive look changes the front end without making the bumper feel too large or pushed too far forward.

The low-profile design does take a little more planning, especially regarding winch and auxiliary lighting compatibility, but once everything is mounted, the result feels worth the effort. For a truck that regularly sees off-road use, this bumper adds capability while keeping it practical for everyday use.
